SML people

Dr Aberdeen is a researcher in NICTA's Canberra based statistical machine learning program. He main interests are Reinforcement Learning and temporal planning under uncertainty. He has a Ph.D from the Australian National University and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science degrees from Melbourne University. (Douglas Aberdeen - Biography)

Dr Buntine is a researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Australian National University. His interests are in theoretical and applied work in machine learning, probabilistic methods, and information access, for instance document analysis.

Dr Caetano is a researcher in the NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning program. Dr Caetano's research interests are in the area of structural pattern recognition, image analysis and computer vision.

Dr Cheng is a researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program and an adjunct fellow at the Australian National University. His research interests are computer vision and machine learning.

  • Kishor Gawande

Mr. Gawande is a system architect at NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research group and mainly responsible for design, development and maintenance of the ELEFANT project. Mr. Gawande has more than eight years of industrial experience in design and development of software products in the areas of embedded systems, networking and communication. He has Master’s degree in computer science from Pune University India.

Dr Guenter is a researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program and an adjunct fellow at the Australian National University. His research interest include Advanced Nonlinear Gradient Methods, i.e. gradient methods which can cope with large data sets and changing environments.

Dr Hegland is a researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program and a senior fellow at the Mathematical Sciences Institute of the Australian National University. His research interests include Computational Mathematics and Data Mining.

Dr Hutter is a senior researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program and an Associate Professor at the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering of the Australian National University. In the last seven years he developed an elegant mathematical theory of rational intelligence. The developed universal optimal learning system, integrates the ideas of Ockham, Epicurus, Turing, Bayes, Solomonoff, Kolmogorov, and Bellman, and can be stated in one line. Besides this grand long-term project, he spends much time on advancing the field of statistical machine learning, in particular he works on Bayesian statistics, MDL, information theory, sequence prediction, and reinforcement learning.

Mr Le is a research assistant in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program. His research focuses on kernel methods, mainly for Gaussian Process regression, classification and transduction.

Dr Sanner is a researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program where he focuses on Planning and Reinforcement Learning.

Dr Schraudolph is a researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program and an adjunct fellow at the Australian National University. He is leading the ANGie project to develop new rapid stochastic gradient methods for the ongoing adaptation of large, complex models to high-volume sensory data streams. Dr Smola is the leader of NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program and an adjunct fellow at the Australian National University. His research interest are nonparametric methods for estimation, in particular kernel methods and exponential families. (Alex Smola - Biography)

Dr Sunehag is a researcher in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning research program. His research interests are Natural Language Processing and Stochastic Approximation. (Peter Sunehag - Biography)

  • Owen Thomas

Mr Thomas is working on the planning and reinforcement learning project together with Dr Aberdeen.

Dr Vishwanathan is a researcher at National ICT Australia with an adjunct appointment at the Research School for Information Sciences and Engineering (RSISE) at the Australian National University. Dr Vishwanathan earned his PhD from the Department of Computer Science and Automation (CSA) at the Indian Institute of Science. (Vishy Vishwanathan - Biography)

  • Christfried Webers

Christfried Webers works as Research Engineer on the Elefant project.

Students

Thesis: Small Sample Size Learning in Bioinformatics (supervised by Dr Kowalczyk)

Mr Bedo obtained a Bachelor of Software Engineering at the Australian National University in Canberra in 2004. His research interests in machine learning focus on applications in Bioinformatics. Currently he is involved in an expanding collaboration between NICTA and Diversity Arrays(TM) Technology P/L. (Justin Bedo - Biography)

  • Dmitry Kamenetsky

Thesis: Machine Learning applied to Go (supervised by Dr Schraudolph)

Mr Kamenetsky joined NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning PhD program in 2006 after completing a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Tasmania. His research interests include: Probabilistic Modeling, Game Theory and Reinforcement Learning.

Thesis: Entropy for Modeling and Learning (supervised by Dr Smola)

Mr Sears joined us after 19 years on Wall Street working in bond markets, risk management and technology. He holds a Masters degree from Carnegie-Mellon U. and and Bachelor's degree form the University of Chicago. He is investigating the use of maximum entropy technques to build statistical models with minimal help from people. (Tim Sears - Biography)

  • Hao Shen

Thesis: Optimisation on Manifolds with Application to Machine Learning (supervised by Dr Smola)

Mr Shen is a PhD student in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning (SML) and Systems Engineering and Complex Systems (SEACS) research programs. His research interests include global convergence analysis of learning algorithms in theory of neural networks; and related applications on stochastic approximation, principal and minor component analysis, independent component analysis, and function approximation.   • Qinfeng(Javen) Shi

Thesis: Understanding Semantics in Videos (supervised by Dr Smola)

Mr Shi is a PhD student in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning (SML) research program. His research interests include machine learning, image analysis, multimedia signal processing, and pattern recognition, in particular Graphic models and kernel methods. He obtained his Master's (research) and Bachelor's degree in School of Computer, Northwestern Polytechnical University, China.

  • Choon Hui Teo

Thesis: Stochastic Gradient Methods for Fast Kernel Algorithms (supervised by Dr Vishwanathan)

Mr Teo obtained a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia in 2005. His research interests are optimisations in machine learning and kernel methods on structured data.

  • Jin Yu

Thesis: Accelerated Stochastic Gradient Methods (supervised by Dr Schraudolph)

Ms. Yu obtained her Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), Belgium and Bachelor's degree in Electrical Technology from Civil Aviation University of China. She is now a PhD student in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning (SML) research program. Her research interests include online learning and stochastic approximations, stochastic gradient methods and large-scale optimisation.

Thesis: Synergism of Differential Geometry, Kernel Methods and Bregman Divergences (supervised by Dr Vishwanathan)

Mr Zhang is a PhD student in NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning (SML) research programs. His research interests include kernel methods, Bregman divergence and differential geometry. He obtained his Master's degree (by research) in computer science from National University of Singapore and Batchelor's degree in CS from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.
